# The Farm That Grows Data as Well as Wheat

The farmer walks his fields the way his father did, but the resemblance ends at the boots. Every hectare he crosses is watched by sensors buried in the soil, photographed from above on a schedule, and modelled overnight on machines he leases rather than owns. The wheat still grows on its ancient timetable. The data grows faster, and it is worth, increasingly, more.

The economics of arable farming have quietly split in two. There is the crop, sold at margins that have not meaningfully improved in a generation, and there is the information the crop produces — soil chemistry, yield curves, the fine-grained record of what works — which the agricultural technology firms will pay handsomely to aggregate.

It is a strange inversion for a trade that measures itself in seasons. The farmer is, without quite having chosen to be, in the data business. He is not sure the data business knows how to farm, and he is fairly sure it does not care to learn.
