For the final third of every concert this season, the city's philharmonic plays in near-darkness and entirely from memory. No stands, no scores, no page-turns — just seventy musicians and the light of the exit signs. It began as a conductor's provocation and has become the most discussed experiment in the orchestra's history.

The argument for it is not showmanship, the conductor insists, but attention. A musician reading a score is, in a sense, always a fraction behind it, translating symbol into sound. A musician playing from memory is inside the music rather than chasing it. “The eyes are a wonderful thing to lose,” she says. “They were doing half the listening.”

Whether audiences can hear the difference is unfalsifiable and beside the point. What they report is a change in the room — a concentration that travels both ways across the footlights. The orchestra, unable to see its own music, seems to listen harder. So, in the dark, does everyone else.
