Every few years the world remembers that it runs on semiconductors, panics about the factories that make them, and forgets again once the shelves refill. The current worry is more specific and less reassuring. The looming shortage is not in the fabrication plants that dominate the headlines. It is in a purified powder, produced by four facilities in three countries, that almost no one outside the industry has heard of.

The material in question is a refined compound essential to a single step in the manufacturing process — a step for which there is, at present, no substitute at scale. The plants that make it are old, expensive to replicate, and located in places whose politics the industry has spent a decade trying not to think about.

What makes the situation instructive is how invisible it was. Supply-chain analysts map the obvious dependencies — the factories, the designs, the rare metals that make the news. This compound sat beneath all of that, a dependency of the dependencies, precisely the kind of link a system only notices when it breaks.

The industry is now scrambling to build redundancy that should have existed years ago. New plants are planned; none will open before the crunch. In the meantime the whole towering edifice of modern computing rests, more than anyone would like, on a powder and four factories that keep making it.

The audit that followed reads like a bill of materials for the entire digital economy. Four line items explain most of the exposure:
