The finding matters because the deep ocean is where the planet stores the consequences of surface change. Heat and carbon absorbed today do not vanish; they sink, circulate, and return centuries later. The ocean is, in effect, a thousand-year archive, and the study suggests the archive is being written to faster than it can turn its pages.
The uncomfortable implication is one of lag. Changes made at the surface now will express themselves in that deep circulation for a millennium, long after anyone alive has stopped watching. The ocean remembers, the authors note, at a pace entirely indifferent to the one at which we are teaching it new things.
